Mutonia, those who live there just call it The Yard. Elsewhere, it is more known as
Mutonia, the land of Mutoid. Name aside, perhaps will remain for posterity the memory of one of the most curious and fascinating experiments of alternative living arrangements in community. A model of settlement that combines improvisation, precariousness, anarchic self-management, compliance the natural habitat and rigorous application of the art of recycling.
The story begins in 1990, when some groups linked to the Mutoid Waste Company, a nomadic company of sculptors, performers and cyberpunk activists founded in the mid 80s by Joe Rush, come with RV and truck shabby in the area of an old quarry near the Marecchia River, for participate in the Festival of theaters of Santarcangelo.

The idea is to stop here just the time needed for and prepare to stage their show and then set off, following their nomadic instincts. Twenty-three years later, some of them are still here, charismatic leaders of a community that is now in its third generation. Others had start over to wander around the world, but they return periodically, because in the meantime Mutonia has become a small home, a place of the roots, for these travelers that the roots do not. The field has grown and changed over the years, but not too much. The Mutoid continue to live in mobile structures without foundations in the midst of their giant sculptures made from recycled industrial materials.
“The Mutoid Waste Company was founded in London in 1986 and since 1991 has a” seat “in Santarcangelo di Romagna. The very name of the company sums up the philosophy of life of its components: inorganic waste of different types such as iron, plastic, rubber, fiber glass, aluminum, copper and brass come to life in absolutely unique and unmistakable sculptures. A constant flow of mutation accompanies not only the design but the same collection of materials, the processing technique, the implementation until the finishing of the projects.
